On a 1966 tour of Japan, Coltrane was asked what he wanted to be in 10 years. “I would like to be a saint,” he said.

The legendary saxophonist would never make his transition to sainthood, but his spirit lives on in San Francisco’s famous Church of John Coltrane. Aeon magazine describes the vibe of this one-of-a-kind congregation is “a rapturous out-of-your-head-ness," mixing African Orthodox liturgy with Coltrane’s quotes and music. The church encourages worshippers to sing along, dance, and clap to the music.

“There is a real desire among aficionados of John Coltrane, not only for his music, but for his philosophy and spirituality as a believer and a saint,” says Pastor Wanika Stephens, “Everyone is welcome here. The main ingredient is love.” Amen!
