Urban Arias

UrbanArias is a ten-year-old opera company dedicated to producing short, contemporary operas. We produce works in English that were written within the last 30 years, and that are roughly 90 minutes or shorter. Our mission is to expose DC-area audiences to engaging, accessible, entertaining operas, and to provide a venue at which both established and emerging composers can present their shorter works. Founded in 2009, our season features two main stage productions. Highlights include ten ten world premieres (among them Gregory Spears' Paul's Case, Sidney Boquiren's Independence Eve, Peter Hilliard's Blue Viola and The Last American Hammer, and Jeffrey Smith's Why Is Eartha Kitt Trying to Kill Me? A Love Story and six commissions, among them Tom Cipullo's Josephine, and Hilliard's Blue Viola and The Last American Hammer). Additionally, UrbanArias presents programs of mini-operas with our special “opera improv,” in which we perform a variety of skits and games based on audience suggestions. UrbanArias released its first recording, of Spears' Paul's Case, in 2019.
