Bowen McCauley Dance

Founded in 1996, Bowen McCauley Dance Company (BMDC) is renowned for its corps of professional dancers, their athleticism and the unique and sublime choreography of Lucy Bowen McCauley. The company collaborates with world-class musicians, artists and designers. BMDC performs regionally and nationally, and has been presented at Festivals in such places as Jacob’s Pillow, New York City, Germany, Mexico and China.
In the Washington area the company has been presented by the Washington Performing Arts Society and performances have included the Kennedy Center, Shakespeare Lansburgh Theatre, Dance Place, 1st Stage, and Signature Theatre to name a few. BMDC also collaborates with numerous dance and musical groups including Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, The Cantate Chamber Singers, The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, The National Chamber Ensemble, The Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra and others.

Community Engagement Programs: BMDC provides entertaining and educational community outreach programs throughout the Metro DC region. These popular programs include in-school performances, workshops, and after-school residency programs for K-12 students. The company also offers intensive master classes for college and university pre-professional dancers. On the other end of the lifecycle, Bowen McCauley Dance Company worked with the Mark Morris Dance Group (NYC) to bring their Dance for Parkinson’s Disease program to the DC Metro region in 2009. Now in entering our 11th year, BMDC leads FREE, weekly Dance for PD® classes for people with this devastating disease and their care-partners in eight area locations. No experience is required and there is no pre-registration to attend. BMDC also offers free Shall We Dance classes, which are inclusive to seniors with varying abilities.
Bowen McCauley Stretch: Lucy Bowen McCauley pioneered a Stretch technique, which uses a series of continuous movement and deep breathing to progress into each stretch. This slow-paced technique increases elasticity in the muscles and freedom in the joints while incorporating deep breathing, to de-stress both the mind and body. The Bowen McCauley Stretch process emphasizes proper alignment and interdependence of good posture and flexibility. There is NO bouncing but instead postures are held for eight counts and repeated for four sets and recovery time is minimal. The Bowen McCauley Stretch technique was pioneered many years ago by Lucy working with her mentor, Jean Paul Mustone, the late exercise physiologist to develop this stretch program.
“McCauley’s stretch class taught me how to stretch and gain more flexibility, which helps prevent injuries. I credit all of the work from the stretch class as the preventive measure that kept me from injuries during the Olympic gymnasts tour.” ---Dominique Dawes (1996 Olympic Gold Medalist).
